My husband Chris and I contacted Absolute Home and Garden to do landscape and other work (including adding a patio) to our little outdoor area. Absolute Home and Garden came to our new home in Denver in March or April 2017 (I do not remember the exact date) to value our space and tell us about what we wanted to do. The guy who came out was very nice and seemed very knowledgeable. After taking notes on what we wanted and doing a bunch of measurements, he left and said that someone from the company would come back with an estimate and renderings. Nobody has ever answered us. We contacted the guy we met and asked him when we could expect the estimate.
And if you're hoping to pour water down the street or into a municipal storm, first contact the city to find out about the applicable regulations. A sketch will help you decide which of the following strategies is best for your situation. For example, if you simply have no way of draining water from a low point to another location, your best option might be to build a rain garden or dry out. A stream bed like this can channel water away from a low point or direct runoff into a rain garden or dry well. With the right landscaping, the creek bed will look good even when it is dry. You can solve the drainage problems and create an attractive landscape at the same time with a dry creek bed.
The grid will be flush with the lawn for easy mowing. A French drain is a versatile system for treating all kinds of drainage problems. It disperses water over a large area through a buried perforated pipe. The pipe must be surrounded by a material allowing the water to flow. Classically it was gravel, but NDS sells a system called EZflow that includes the pipe and the surrounding polystyrene aggregate in one convenient and lightweight package. A French drainage system can be used alone or in combination with a dry well. A properly designed French drain system does not require an outlet. The water will simply soak in the soil as it runs down the perforated pipe.
Although detailed and complex, the process can be enjoyable if taken a little at a time. You will not regret spending the time doing it properly. When you have finished, you will have a master plan - or a masterful design - to show for your efforts. In the case where the words "blueprint" seem concrete, you can find the idea of a "long-term plan" less fixed but no less useful in accomplishing the big and small goals that add up to a satisfactory landscape. Before putting a pencil on paper or planting flowers, take the time to determine what you want to accomplish in your landscape. Much of the planning and design will happen in your head when you think of ideas and think about what you like the most.
