We recognize that the more a person goes through transition spaces from a completely closed environment to a fully open environment, the more the experience becomes transparent and connected. Addressing the hierarchy, or order, of space and scale is also important. More precisely, land use can be determined by the scale of a space. Roads, for example, have a defined hierarchy. All lanes can be of standard size (large enough to accommodate a vehicle), but the streets are designed to accommodate a certain volume of traffic. As such, a level 1 road such as a highway may have four lanes in each direction.
Linear shapes emphasize the real and imaginary lines in the landscape and play an important role in the creation of small and large spaces. Draw the viewer's eye through the landscape by grouping plants or hardscape elements (Figure 19-24). The eye is unconsciously influenced by how the groupings fit and flow horizontally and vertically. Variety created through diverse and contrasting shapes, textures and colors is a feature of good landscape design. By avoiding uniformity, the variety reduces monotony in a design. Adding elements with contrasting qualities or contrast increases visual interest and increases viewer satisfaction with the design (Figure 19-25).
Review a topographic map of the site and browse the property to review stormwater trends. Look for signs of erosion and note poorly drained or low areas that remain wet for several days after a rain. For areas with signs of erosion, consider rainwater harvesting options to reduce the amount of water flowing through these areas after a rain event. rain. Consider contour lines to slow down runoff, minimize erosion and allow water to seep into the soil. Overall, by addressing these environmental factors, we can create a model that is in harmony rather than conflicting with natural patterns. This strategy leads to a successful, attractive, low maintenance and environmentally friendly landscape.
