Then, bury a plastic collection basin at the source and connect it to the drain with a PVC drain pipe. This system has some advantages over a French drain (see page 46). Since the pipe is solid and not perforated, it is not necessary to provide gravel for drainage along the drain pipe. In addition, the smooth-walled pipe evacuates water quickly, and if it is plugged, you can use a drainage snake to clean it. Drain Hose Discharge: The drain end of your drain hose can be connected to an automatic emitter that is flush with the lawn when water is not flowing. Drain Hole: Place the intake sump at the low point of your dipped area.
Irrigation: I watered the tree for the first summer, but now I do not water at all. Fertilizer: I put organic fertilizer on the last two sources but not this year. Maintenance: I prune the dead branches in the fall and rake the leaves. I also put a layer of compost around the roots each fall. Are there any significant water problems? Yes, we receive stagnant water for a day or two after heavy rush (Figure 19 - 53). What does the floor look like? It is a clay soil, very red. Describe the light. How many hours of sunshine? It is planted in a shady corner of the yard at the corner of the property. This part of the yard receives only 3 to 4 hours of filtered sun per day.
"If you're planting a lawn that's used to your climate, it does not require much maintenance," says Chris. You can search which grass grows best in your area, and in turn save money on watering, fertilizing and other maintenance work. For example: In the North- Is where the couple live in his Cape Cod home - the fescue and ryegrass grow well. Alternatively, in the Southeast, Bermuda grass is a better option. Incorporating pots into the landscaping not only makes a garden easier to maintain, but also more versatile. "We like to use pots, especially for customers who want color in different parts of the yard," says Peyton.

If trees are desired near the structure of the house, choose a tree with a small canopy at full growth so that the branches do not interfere with the porch or roof. Placing tall trees in the yard and medium or small trees on the sides and front makes the house stand out (Figure 19-37). The dogwood (Cornus florida), the Japanese flowering apricot (Prunus mume), the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), the eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), the deaf wood (Oxydendron arboretum) and the lettuce (Amelanchier) are examples of small trees in the canopy.
Evaluating the winter and summer sun angles, as shown in Figure 19-32, tells us where to leave the open areas that allow the winter sun’s rays to heat the house and outdoor living spaces. Knowing the direction of prevailing winter winds is crucial in deciding where to place a windbreak, which can be particularly important in the mountains or on the coast. Understanding wind patterns is also important to avoid including structures or plants in the design that block summer breezes from outdoor living spaces.
