This final plan (Figure 19-51) shows all the changes to existing features of the site, such as walks or alleyways and additions, such as a patio, pool or patio. The final plan also shows the location of all the plant material. Figure 19-52 assigns numbers to plants on the parcel plane and Table 19-3 gives a suggested plant list. Trees and hedges reduce the noise of the road and provide privacy while offering a windbreak against cold winter winds or channeling summer breezes. Landscaping requires an investment of time and money, but there are many rewards like a more enjoyable outdoor environment and increased property value. The first step in developing a landscape of the house is to draw a scale drawing of the property and the house. It should show all existing buildings, trees, septic system and water, electrical lines (above and below ground), street, sidewalk, slope of the land and the north / south orientation of the property. The location of existing doors, windows, driveway and service areas (clotheslines, trash cans, etc.) should be indicated. Using scale drawing, develop a plan for use of the land area.

Stake out of space to see if it's the right size, if the location provided enjoys good views in the yard and beyond, and if the site is out of direct traffic to and from the House.
